Russian criminals have an elaborate culture of getting ink done when in prison. Russians who are sent to prison find tattoos a valuable way to know who is who. Tattoos are used to signify the persons history and status. They can be used to detail crimes, status, skills, sexuality, attitude and many other aspects.

A number of designs act as a code within the systems of the Russian prison system, allowing communication between inmates.

A crucifix on the chest means that the wearer is a "Prince of Thieves", which is one of the highest ranks a member of the Russian mafia can attain.

Most of the tattoos are made in prison, but because of the lack of ink they have to get creative, they burn the sole of a shoe and mix it with urine.
