In your community you may know the Neighborhood watch program by other names – Building Watch, Community Watch or Crime Watch. By any name it is highly recommended by home security monitoring companies to participate in the program to help lower the potential for you or anyone on your street becoming victims of burglary.

The first step to take is call for a meeting of all your neighbors to find out if crime is a big enough issue to form a watch program. You can ask your local law enforcement agency to come out and give a talk on the reality of burglaries in your area and the need to be proactive about it. You will need to determine block captains and an effective system of communication through volunteers.

Anyone can volunteer for these positions. It does not matter if you own your home or rent. Participation by as many people as possible equates to a safer neighborhood, increased personal safety and a lower incidence of crime.
