We all think of our pets as family members and when there is an emergency we want to make sure they are safe. If your smoke detectors trigger an alarm because there is a fire in the house, make sure you already have a plan in place to care for your pets and get them to a safe place.
- Pets are not allowed in shelters or Red Cross facilities so it’s a good idea to now in advance which hotels and motels will let them stay
- As part of an emergency preparedness plan check with friends and family to see if they can care for your pets for a short period
- Put together an emergency kits for your pets that includes food, a can opener, food and water dishes, toys, litter and a pan, veterinarian information, medical records, leashes, a first aid kit and medications
- Get your pets outside as soon as possible if an emergency arises
Keep your pets secure in a vehicle or a carrier so they don’t get lost
