A couple years ago there was a university study done of the effects of the crime rates in neighborhoods when more residences were protected with security systems. The outcome of the study showed that overall when there were more home with security equipment in a neighborhood, crooks tended to leave and find less protected areas.
Burglars tend to hit several homes in one area if they know they can get in and out undetected. Case in point – recently 4 homes within a couple blocks of each other were broken into and burglarized. The bandits used various methods to force entry including breaking the glass in a sliding door, busting out a screen window or squeezing through a pet door.
The burglars made off with several thousand dollars in electronics, jewelry and firearms. It’s believed that the thugs knocked on the door to determine if anyone was home before attempting to break in. If any of the residents had been using video surveillance monitoring the intruders could have been identified.
